Kyoto — First Impressions: Zen and the Art of Walking
Trading the neon of Tokyo for the temples of Kyoto.
The Shinkansen ride from Tokyo to Kyoto is an experience in itself. Watching the landscape transition from urban sprawl to rural mountains while sipping on an Ekiben is peak travel.
Seeking Silence
Kyoto is the antithesis of Tokyo’s neon chaos. It’s a city of shrines, gardens, and quiet backstreets. My first stop was Fushimi Inari-taisha.
The thousands of vermilion torii gates create a tunnel-like path up the mountain. Even with the crowds at the base, as you climb higher, the sounds of the city fade away, replaced by the rustle of wind through the trees.
The Tea Ceremony
Later in the afternoon, I participated in a traditional tea ceremony in Gion. The precision and mindfulness required for even the simplest movements is a powerful reminder to slow down.
Tomorrow, we explore the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove.
